NAPA VALLEY JAEGER FAMILY EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
2007 FALL HARVEST
About Jaeger Family EVO
The history of this oil and the Jaeger family who produces it paints a picture of the renaissance of olive oil production in California. Lila Jaeger, the founder of Jaeger Family EVO, was single-handedly responsible for its re-emergence in the early 1990’s. When Lila, with characteristic curiosity, first discovered 100-year-old abandoned olive trees on her then Rutherford Hill Winery in the Napa Valley, she set out to learn about olive oil production. With a pioneering spirit, she lovingly restored the trees and produced her first oil in 1991…all 15 cases!
During those early years Lila traveled to Europe with her newfound passion to learn about producing world-class extra virgin olive oil. In 1992 this led to her founding the California Olive Oil Council as a means to exchange information and provide resources for local growers. As if that wasn’t enough, in 1996 Lila, together with 12 other producers, started their own cooperative olive mill in the European tradition. Today all of the oil is still pressed at that facility each November.
Ever the pioneer, Lila proceeded to be the first to plant varietals she discovered on one of her trips to France, importing rootstock of Bouteillan, Aglandau and Farga…now a major component of the award-winning Napa Valley Jaeger Family Estate EVO.
When Lila Jaeger unexpectedly passed away in 2002, her daughter-in-law, Kris Jaeger, ably took over and today carries on the tradition together with her children and orchard manager, Salvador Ramos. Kris obviously learned quite well as she has gone on to make their Jaeger Family oil each year that has garnered many industry awards.
About the Oil
The 2007 fall harvest, the oil proudly bears the name Napa Valley Jaeger Family Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Jaeger family has released another worthy successor to last year’s triple gold medal winning oil from their three acres of estate trees planted in Napa’s prized Oak Knoll district. The blend is made up of the following varieties:
65% Aglandau and Bouteillan
30% Leccino
5% Cayon
About the Taste
The 2007 Jaeger Family EVO is a bit bolder than in years past with a nose of fresh cut grass, almonds and herbs, and a taste that is lush and fruity with a pleasant sweetness to the mouth. The finish is pungent and with a pleasant, lingering taste on the palate. A winning oil for those looking for the classic intensity of a rustic, Tuscan style oil but with the "edges" smoothed out by the softer nature of the French varietals added to the blend.
